Final Artist Statement
A
year and a half ago when I stated taking photos, I had no idea what subjects I
enjoyed taking pictures or anything.
During my independent study I explored different subjects, ones I knew I
liked photographing and ones I knew I didn’t like photographing, even new
ones. A year ago when I was in
photo 1 I really disliked the still life projects, this time around I found
that I enjoy the still life projects as long as the subject matter is something
that has meaning behind it and not just fruit in a bowl. I really dislike taking pictures that
have a lot going on in them, like street photography. To me street photography
is just too messy with a whole lot going on in the picture that you have
nowhere to focus. I realized that
my favorite subject matter to photograph is nature. Particularly, the ocean. There is just something about the ocean that is so beautiful
and calming that I just enjoy being by it, and capturing that beauty for one
second in time is just amazing to me.
There is so much you can do with taking pictures by the ocean that I
know, you can write messages in the sand, photograph foot prints going into the
water (one of my favorites), you can take the picture as a whole landscape, or
just do the waves with no horizon line. My other favorite subject matter to
photograph is people, especially my boyfriend and little kids. There is just
something about catching a facial expression or an emotion that is just
exciting and you can really get some good pictures when you just take them
randomly at different times when the emotions and energy level is always
changing.
In
conclusion during my last year of photo I have discovered who I am as a
photographer and what I strive to accomplish as one. I know what I like
photographing and what I don’t like. I will take pictures for as long as I can
because it is a way for me to reflect who I am through different subject
matters.
